Laura Ellen Anderson’s Amelia Fang and the Unicorn Lords is a glittery, very silly quest for 7 year olds about a little vampire who has to sneak through the land of unicorns dressed as a fairy.

Amelia lives in Nocturnia, where everyone sleeps all day and a good pastry is full of pus. Today she’s heading for the Kingdom of the Light with her best friends. Florence the yeti SHOUTS EVERYTHING. Grimaldi is a very nervous grim reaper. And Prince Tangine keeps forgetting he’s not supposed to be bossy.

They’re helping Tangine’s dad, King Vladimir, look for someone he lost years ago. (Who it is would give away the first book, so I’ll leave it there.) The only clue is a glittery scrap of parchment about a city called Glitteropolis.

Creatures of the Light think vampires suck blood and yetis crush bones, so everyone needs a disguise. Florence gets a unicorn horn and the king gets ladybird wings.

It goes wrong straight away. A very rude wishing well offers three wishes and Florence wastes the lot. The last one accidentally turns the king into a bumblebee, and off he buzzes!

The fun is that everything’s upside down. Grimaldi shrieks when a butterfly tries to land on him. Amelia eats a bowl of Fizzling Flower Fruit Pops and wishes it were Crusty Toenails. Who else would be homesick for an Armpit-Sweat Shake?

There’s a proper mystery too. In Glitteropolis everybody adores Alpha Unicorn and his unicorn lords. But Creatures of the Light keep vanishing and Creatures of the Dark are getting the blame. Now the Rainbow Rail, the only way out of the city, is closing for good.

Worth knowing before you hand it over. People going missing is what the story runs on. Tangine is really upset when his dad buzzes away. Amelia is alone in a forest when she hears somebody being carried off.

It’s far more giggly than scary, with plenty of bottom jokes. But if you’ve got a child who frets about a mum or dad disappearing, you might want to be nearby for the wishing well.

This is the second Amelia Fang book, sold in America as Amelia Fang and the Unicorns of Glitteropolis. (That’s the edition here, so Mum is Mom and bottoms are butts.) It leans on the first one, so start with Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball if you can.

If the disguises are their favourite bit, Monster and Chips plays the same trick the other way round. Joe is a human boy working in a diner for monsters, and he ends up disguised as one to sneak into Monsterworld. The menu’s just as revolting, snotburgers included.
