The magical end at 5 to 7, the stables and classics at 7 to 9, the series binges at 9 to 11, and a heads up for the ones that will make them cry.

Everything here is in our library, most on the animal books shelf, and where a series has more titles in stock I’ve said so, because a pony phase eats books the way ponies eat carrots.

How the series ladder works

Magical ponies are the on-ramp at 5 to 7, because the pony can talk back and the plot is light and fluffy.

Around 7 or 8 there are riding lessons, shows, ponies with minds of their own. I’d say Sunshine Stables is great for 7, the Racehorse books at 8, Saddle Club and Pony Club Secrets at 9.

Misty’s Twilight and The Silver Brumby suit the same 8 or 9 year old as the modern series, but they read older. Richer horsiness, wilder weather, fewer jokes.

And the sad ones come last (deliberately). More on that at the bottom.

Children’s horse books for ages 5 to 7

At this age ponies can be magic (and probably should be).

What matters is short chapters, a friendship at the centre, and a pony who is properly a character rather than a prop.

The Secret Rescuers: The Sea Pony by Paula Harrison

The Secret Rescuers: The Sea Pony

Paula HarrisonAge 7Adventure

›

Grace lives in the sunny seaside village of Cala Sands and swims with the magical sea ponies in the bay, wishing she could talk to them, especially the one with sparkling eyes and a rainbow tail.

Then she learns the kingdom’s magical creatures are in danger, and gets her chance to help.

If it goes down well, the library also has the Storm Dragon and Baby Firebird adventures from the same series. But is it worth winning at all costs? Nutmeg has opinions about that.

Short, warm and horsey in all the right ways. Age 7.

Ages 7 to 9

Real stables now, real problems, and the start of the classics.

This band is where the obsession usually sets in properly, and where a reader starts having opinions about tack.

In The Pony With No Name by Tracey Corderoy, Bryony May doesn’t want to move house, even to a sweet cottage by the sea, because it means leaving her friends and the riding stables behind.

Then, exploring the woods near her new home, she finds a beautiful bay pony (seriously spooked) and she’s the one who can calm him. Age 8.

Horse Diaries: Lily by Whitney Sanderson is told from the horse’s side, which for a certain kind of reader is perfect.

Lily is a strawberry roan Welsh pony with a competitive heart, and the series mixes horses with history.

The library also stocks the Cinders instalment, where a horse with a bad reputation meets a no-nonsense fire dog in old Chicago. Age 8.

Now for the classics, starting with Misty’s Twilight by Marguerite Henry.

Twilight is a direct descendant of Misty of Chincoteague (the most famous pony in children’s books) with wild-island blood and one hundred percent fire and talent. Her question is whether she can shine against the best horses in the world, as a jumper, a cutting horse, or in dressage. Age 8.

The Silver Brumby by Elyne Mitchell is the other great classic, and a bit wilder than anything else here.

Thowra (the magnificent silver stallion) becomes king of the brumbies in the Australian mountains, hunted by man and rival horses alike, and must defend his herd against the mighty Brolga.

For the child who loves horses as wild creatures rather than pets, this is the one.

The library carries the later collections too (Silver Brumby Kingdom and Echoing), so there are more waiting if they like it. Age 8 to 9.

Ages 9 to 11

The plot of these books starts to match the experiences of this age category. Friendships get as important as the horses, the rivalries get sharper, and the stories share bigger feelings.

This is probably the band where you can hand over book one of a long series and buy yourself a quiet fortnight (yay!).

Saddle Club: A Summer Without Horses by Bonnie Bryant

Saddle Club 1 – A Summer Without Horses

Bonnie BryantAge 9Animals

›

The binge series.

When Stevie is injured, the Saddle Club make a pact not to ride until she recovers, and whoever breaks it has to ask stuck-up Veronica di Angelo to join them.

Horses, friendship politics and a new drama every book, with more than five Saddle Club titles in the library to disappear into. This first book carries the series’ big emotional turn, and it hits hard. Which brings us neatly to the honest bit…

When are they ready for the sad ones?

Every horse-lover eventually reaches the books that will break their heart, and the greatest of them is War Horse.

Joey sees the First World War from both sides of the trenches, and it is magnificent and devastating in equal measure.

At 11 it becomes a favourite book of somebody’s life. At 8 it’s just an upset. Personally, I’d hold off until 11.

It’s ranked, along with the rest of his best, in our Michael Morpurgo guide.

A few more for the stable door. The Curse of the Pony Vampires and The Enchanted Pony are Babette Cole’s pair for the 8 year old who likes their ponies ridiculous, and The Lonely Pony catches the very youngest rider at 5.

And if your pony-mad reader is really an animal-mad reader, the same binge instinct feeds happily on our books like Warrior Cats list, or the gentler herd on our family read-aloud list.

Just so you know…

Every book above is in Little Reads, a library of 3,000+ hand-picked books for children aged 5 to 11.

A free account gives you 100+ free books, and full access is £7.99 a month after a 7-day free trial.
