Short version first. If you’re wondering what age Horrid Henry is for, the main books work from about 6 reading alone, earlier as a read-aloud, and the joke keeps landing until 9 or so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes Henry one of the first proper series many children ever finish by themselves, which is why he inspires the kind of loyalty usually reserved for football teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Francesca Simon<\/a> has been writing him since before your child was born, so there’s a mountain of books to work through. If there’s a pile of funny books for 6 year olds<\/a> by your child’s bed, definitely worth checking it out. Henry’s usually in there somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the answer looks messier than it is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The search results for this one are a muddle. Box-set listings with three different age ranges, a couple of Wikipedia pages, and a parenting forum thread going round in circles. Nobody actually answers the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The confusion has a simple cause. Horrid Henry exists in two formats. There are Early Reader editions in the shops, single stories with colour pictures, pitched at children of about 5 to 7 who are just starting to read alone. And there are the main books, each holding four longer stories. Same Henry, different job. Once you know that, the contradictory age ranges online suddenly make sense. They’re describing different shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What age is Horrid Henry for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The main collections sit at 6 on our shelves, and 6 to 9 is the happy zone. Each book is four short stories, which is a brilliant shape for a newly independent reader. One story per sitting, a clean finish every time, no plot to lose track of overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for what’s in them, it’s exactly what the covers promise. In Horrid Henry Tricks the Tooth Fairy<\/a>, Henry can’t stand that Perfect Peter loses a tooth before him, so he sets out to con the Tooth Fairy out of a pound. In Horrid Henry’s Stinkbomb<\/a>, a stinkbomb becomes a deadly weapon in his long-running war with Moody Margaret. In Horrid Henry’s Underpants<\/a>, he accidentally wears girls’ underwear to school. Pranks, schemes, sibling warfare. Nothing scary, ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the worry every parent has voiced at some point, that Henry might be a bad influence? Children read Henry the way they’d watch a pantomime villain. The fun is watching the scheme unravel. Six year olds are usually very clear that Henry is being horrid, that’s the whole joke, and they feel superior to him while cackling at everything he does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quick word on the Early Readers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If yours is 5 and Henry-mad, those colour single-story editions are the right shape for them, and a perfectly good place to start.
