If you’re wondering what age The Hunger Games book is for, it’s a 12-plus read. A sturdy 11 year old who’s read big books before will be fine. At 9 or 10, my honest answer is not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s the book. The first film is rated 12A, which is its own decision for another day. But if your child has come home asking for the book (usually because someone in Year 6 is carrying it around), this is the one you’re weighing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suzanne Collins<\/a> wrote a genuinely brilliant trilogy, and it sits at the very top end of children’s action books<\/a>, right on the border with teen fiction. The question isn’t whether it’s good. It’s whether it’s now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What age is The Hunger Games book for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The publisher pitches it at roughly 11 to 13. Most of the big review sites land on 12 and up. Nobody credible says 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for once, the sites agree for a sensible reason. This isn’t a case of grown-ups being precious about a scary chapter. It’s the premise itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s actually in it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here’s the plot, said plainly. In the ruins of North America, a government keeps its districts in line by making children fight to the death on live TV, one boy and one girl from each district, every year. Sixteen-year-old Katniss volunteers to take her little sister’s place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The writing isn’t gory, and there’s no swearing and barely a kiss. But children die in it, some of them kindly ones, and the book takes their deaths seriously. Katniss spends the story grieving, calculating and afraid. That’s the point of it, and it’s exactly the part a 9 year old isn’t ready to carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does the trilogy get darker?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes. Catching Fire raises the stakes, and Mockingjay is a war book, with everything war does to the people in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So even once your child starts, there’s no rule that says all three in one summer. A 12 year old who loved book one<\/a> can meet Mockingjay at 13 and get more from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reading level isn’t the problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A fluent 9 or 10 year old who’s polished off Percy Jackson can decode every word of The Hunger Games. That’s what makes this one tricky. The gate isn’t vocabulary, it’s content, and those are two different questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 10 up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the one for the child drawn to Katniss’s world more than Katniss’s fight. For 10 and 11 year olds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big ideas, real danger, and a straight line into one of the great series for when they’re older. For 11 up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One more, for the child whose favourite part is survival against the odds: Wolf Road<\/a> follows Tuuli, a prehistoric girl whose tribe lives or dies by the seasons, the hunt and the weather. No arena required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
