{"id":10370,"date":"2026-06-29T08:58:51","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T08:58:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/readingmate.co.uk\/littlereads\/?post_type=lr_article&#038;p=10370"},"modified":"2026-06-29T08:58:53","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T08:58:53","slug":"books-like-a-series-of-unfortunate-events","status":"publish","type":"lr_article","link":"https:\/\/readingmate.co.uk\/littlereads\/articles\/books-like-a-series-of-unfortunate-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Books Like A Series of Unfortunate Events (for the gloriously gloomy reader)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Series of Unfortunate Events does something not many books pull off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s gloomy and grim and a bit doom-laden, and it&#8217;s also very funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three clever orphans, one ridiculous villain in a string of bad disguises, and a narrator who keeps telling you to put the book down before it ruins your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your child has read all thirteen of the Baudelaire books and is now after books like A Series of Unfortunate Events, I&#8217;ve got some that will hit the spot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These have the same deadpan wit, the same shadowy houses, the same plucky kids running rings round useless grown-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve pulled five from <a href=\"\/littlereads\/fantasy-books\/\">our fantasy shelf<\/a> plus one step up for a reader who wants something a bit more advanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So who is this list for? The child who quotes the narrator&#8217;s warnings at the dinner table. The one who loved that the Baudelaires were always the cleverest people in the room and the grown-ups never listened. <em>And<\/em> the reader who likes a shiver and a snigger on the same page (and isn&#8217;t remotely put off by a sad ending or a wicked guardian).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that&#8217;s yours, they&#8217;ll feel right at home with this lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should books like A Series of Unfortunate Events have?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few things, really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A setting with a bit of gloom to it, cobbled streets or a crumbling house or a factory that&#8217;s been shut for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humour with a dark edge, the kind that makes you chuckle even while something nasty is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children who are cleverer than the adults and have to be, because the adults are either absent or dreadful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A proper mystery (not a predictable puzzle that solves itself).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, crucially, the menace is hinted at rather than shown, creepy but never gory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Five books like A Series of Unfortunate Events for 9 to 11 year olds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curse of the Night Wolf by Paul Stewart<\/h3>\n\n\n<a class=\"lr-bookpill\" href=\"https:\/\/readingmate.co.uk\/littlereads\/our-library\/curse-of-the-night-wolf\/\" aria-label=\"View Curse of the Night Wolf in the library\"><div class=\"lr-bookpill__cover\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/readingmate.co.uk\/littlereads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ebookupload-1674214199634-196x300.jpeg\" class=\"lr-bookpill__cover-img\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readingmate.co.uk\/littlereads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ebookupload-1674214199634-196x300.jpeg 196w, https:\/\/readingmate.co.uk\/littlereads\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ebookupload-1674214199634.jpeg 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/div><div class=\"lr-bookpill__body\"><p class=\"lr-bookpill__title\">Curse of the Night Wolf<\/p><div class=\"lr-bookpill__meta\"><span>Paul Stewart<\/span><span class=\"lr-bookpill__meta-dot\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><span>Age 9<\/span><span class=\"lr-bookpill__meta-dot\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span><span>Mystery<\/span><\/div><\/div><span class=\"lr-bookpill__chev\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&rsaquo;<\/span><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barnaby Grimes is an errand boy who runs messages across his city day and night and &#8220;high-stacks&#8221; over the rooftops when the streets get dull, always on the lookout for a mystery to solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One night an enormous dog attacks him. He kills it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that, it turns out, is not the end of the matter at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is Victorian-gothic and fast, with a witty narrator and a properly eerie thread running through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the child who finished all thirteen and wanted a fourteenth, Barnaby&#8217;s voice will feel like old friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First in a series, so there&#8217;s more once they&#8217;re hooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Castle of Shadows who&#8217;d rather she stopped asking questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s a crumbling castle, codes to crack and a heroine who refuses to be managed by the adults around her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your child loved watching the Baudelaires outwit Count Olaf, Charlie is cut from the same cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p crackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before she can decide on the most ladylike way to cope, she&#8217;s flung into an urgent quest, pitted against another young witch to rescue the sacred Moreover Wand from the dangerous underworld beneath the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cobbled streets, a missing mum, a heroine well out of her depth.
