One of the great things about teaching is that no two classes (or kids) are the same. But <\/em>(and this might be a controversial one) almost every class has a Mildred Hubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’ve landed here looking for books like The Worst Witch, stick with me. The list is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now these kids wouldn’t necessarily have their hat on sideways, a cat refusing to sit on the broomstick, or be one potion away from flooding the classroom. But the chaos and mishaps surrounding this particular child remained the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s the whole appeal of The Worst Witch. And why its popularity has stood the test of time and <\/em>why I loved the books (and TV series) when I was a kid too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mildred crashing her broomstick, botching her spells and making an enemy of the dreadful Ethel was always entertaining. But the thing that stands out about her is that she stays kind through all of it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generations of children have loved her for exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if yours has torn through Mildred’s adventures and wants more of the same, good news. This is a list filled with the useless-but-trying kind of witches (not the cackling-in-the-woods kind).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve pulled five favourites from the magic books<\/a> shelf. Witch schools, spells that misfire and heroines you’re rooting for. They cover ages 5 to 11 between them, so there should be one that fits whichever witch fan you’ve got.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to look for in an after-Worst Witch book<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now there is only one<\/em> Mildred. But the books that work after her need to be set in a world your little reader would move into tomorrow<\/em>. This could be a school for spells, a town hiding magic, a kingdom of friendly monsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another thing to look for is a character who messes up and keeps going. Mildred fails at something every single term. That’s what makes her so likeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are tonnes of magic books that can sometimes tread over into the scary territory too. That’s not what we’re looking for after The Worst Witch. We want laughs instead of scares. Spells backfire for comedy. Not creepy curses and demons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally there’s got to be a few to get stuck into. The Worst Witch has plenty to enjoy and if your little reader is anything like I was as a child (and adult), these readers are binge readers. So handing them a one-off is a hard no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bea Black has just moved to Little Spellshire, a town with a magical secret. Her dad enrols her at the local school without realising it’s a school for witches, and suddenly Bea’s to-do list reads. Making friends, looking after the grumpy class frog and <\/em>staying on the broom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She’s scribbling it all down in her diary while the Halloween Ball gets closer and her wand skills don’t. And the biggest job of all? Keeping the whole witch thing secret from her dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the closest match here to Mildred. New girl, magic school, everything going sideways. The diary format and the doodles make it an easy sell for a child who finds solid pages of text a bit much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amelia Fang and the Half-Moon Holiday \u2014 Laura Ellen Anderson<\/h3>\n\n\n

For the child who likes a bit of monster with their magic. Amelia Fang is a young vampire from gloomy Nocturnia, where the half-moon holidays have just started and school is out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amelia and her friends are off to Sugar Plum Island with their Rainbow Rangers troop, led by two unicorns called Ricky and Graham (I know, great names right?). Then the gang stumble on an ancient curse and get shrunk to the size of bugs, and a small island becomes a very big adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s brightly illustrated, very silly, and sweet under all the fangs. Whatever goes wrong, Amelia’s friends are in it with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laura Ellen Anderson<\/a> has written a stack of Amelia Fang stories too. Around age 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Molly Moon’s Incredible Book of Hypnotism \u2014 Georgia Byng<\/h3>\n\n\n

Not a witch, this one. Arguably better. Molly Moon is an orphan who finds a mysterious old book on hypnotism and discovers she can make people do whatever she wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pause and imagine what your child would do with that power. (If it was me I’d go with unlimited Maltesers and a puppy in every room.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sinister stranger is watching Molly, though, and he’ll do anything to steal her hypnotic secret. So she has to stay one step ahead of him while working out how far her new powers can take her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This one suits a reader of 9 or so who’s moved past school-spells stories but still wants magic. Also, there are more Molly Moon books<\/a> to follow when they get hooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Apprentice Witch \u2014 James Nicol<\/h3>\n\n\n

This one would feel like a step-up compared to the others on this list. Arianwyn fluffs her witch’s assessment and is handed the dull bronze disc of an apprentice (to the delight of her arch-rival Gimma).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her posting is Lull, a remote town where nothing magical is supposed to happen. Then Gimma (who happens to be the pompous mayor’s favourite niece) opens a magical rift in the nearby forest, and Arianwyn’s wobbly spells are suddenly the town’s best defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s basically Mildred grown up a few years. The same kind of girl, failing her way to the rescue, in a longer book with higher stakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One for readers of 10 or 11 who are starting to grow out of Mildred but aren’t ready to let go of witches. Which is most of us, frankly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winnie the Witch \u2014 Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul<\/h3>\n\n\n

And one for the youngest witch fan in the house. Winnie turns everything in her house black to hide the mess. Job done, until she realises she can no longer see Wilbur, her black cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So she fixes it with a bit more magic. And that’s when the trouble really starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every Winnie problem is solved with a spell, and every spell causes a new problem, which five-year-olds (and adults) find endlessly funny. The pictures are packed with tiny details to spot on the third, fourth and fifteenth read too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there’s a younger sibling tagging along behind your Worst Witch reader, start here. Age 5, and a lovely one to read together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they just want more Mildred<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No problem. Before you move on, check they’ve actually run out, because Mildred’s story carries on. In The Worst Witch All At Sea<\/a> she smuggles her beloved cat Tabby on the school seaside trip, and in The Worst Witch and the Wishing Star<\/a> a wish on a shooting star lands her with a secret pet dog. In A Bad Spell for the Worst Witch, Ethel turns her into a frog. In my opinion, more Jill Murphy<\/a> is rarely the wrong answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if your Worst Witch fan sits at the younger end of the 5 to 11 range, our piece on first chapter books for 6 year olds<\/a> is full of the same sort of short, funny, heavily illustrated books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing this list isn’t is scary. If your child wants witches that properly frighten them, that’s a different list (and they’re braver than I am). Everything here focuses on magic for laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
